About Taxpayer Advocate Service

The Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) is an independent organization within the IRS that helps taxpayers resolve tax problems they haven't been able to fix through normal IRS channels. TAS is free and available to all taxpayers, including individuals, businesses, and exempt organizations. Each state has at least one Local Taxpayer Advocate who can provide personalized assistance with IRS issues including collection disputes, refund delays, and systemic problems.

What's Great

  • โœ“Independent from the IRS โ€” advocates for the taxpayer, not the agency
  • โœ“Available in every state through Local Taxpayer Advocate offices
  • โœ“Can intervene when IRS actions cause significant financial hardship
  • โœ“Helps with systemic issues that affect multiple taxpayers

Watch Out For

  • !Limited to cases where normal IRS channels have failed
  • !Cannot override legitimate IRS tax assessments or legal obligations
  • !Processing can be slow due to high demand and government staffing constraints
